Washago in the Dark – Summer Solstice

About 180 people enjoyed an evening of professionally prepared dishes of Elk, Moose, Venison, Bear, and various types of fish at the Rotary Club of Washago & Area - Centennial, fifth annual Wild Game Dinner on Saturday, April 25th, 2009. The event consisted to two sittings. One sitting took place at 5:00 PM and the other at 7:00 PM. Attendees traveled from Toronto and Alliston in the south to Bracebridge in the north and all points in between. All excess food was donated to the Lighthouse Christian Ministry Drop In center in Orillia.

On Sunday, February 22nd, about 30 people attended The Rotary Club of Washago & Area Centennial 3rd annual Oscar Night at the Washago Community Centre. Many participants dressed up in true Oscar Awards style including tuxedos and gowns. The event involved the purchase of an Oscar Night ballot of all Academy Award nominations and local club member Rod Harth chose the most correct Oscar winners and received First Prize which was Easter Brunch for four at Bayview Wildwood Resort on Sparrow Lake.

Cars in at least five countries are sporting End Polio Now magnets in a project initiated by the Rotary Club of Washago and Area-Centennial, Ontario, Canada. The magnets cost C$2 (US$1.60) each, with free shipping anywhere in North America. The club has raised more than US$1,115 for Rotary's challenge as of 21 January.

Documentary on polio eradication receives Oscar nod

The second annual Washago Rotary Digital Photo Scavenger Hunt was won on September 20th, 2008 by a team called "The Flashers" from Severn Bridge. The first prize winners took home $500 cash. The event began at the Washago Community Centre at 9:00 AM and ended at 2:00 PM at St Paul's Anglican Church in Washago where participants enjoyed barbequed sausages and soft drinks. All participants also enjoyed a slide show of the day's photos taken by each team. Participants were required to take as many pictures as possible from a list of 100 photos. Each photo was worth between 10 and 100 points depending on the level of difficulty. The Flashers achieved 2,725 points which was 195 points ahead of second place team The Canon Rebels who won $75.

Washago student nurse Allyson Marshall gave a report on Wednesday this week to the members of The Rotary Club of Washago & Area - Centennial of her recent trip to The Dominican Republic with Rayjon Share Care of Sarnia, Ontario where she assisted in administering nursing care along with 23 other nursing student volunteers and one doctor. The trip took place between April 22 and April 30, 2008.

On the evening of February 23rd, 1905 Paul Harris, a Chicago Lawyer invited three friends to a meeting to talk about their personal experiences. Fast forward 100 years to the day, at Bayview Wildwood Resort on February 23rd, 2005. The Rotary Club of Washago & Area - Centennial was born and received it’s official charter from the very organization that was formed by Paul Harris and his three friends 100 years before.

The members of The Rotary Club of Washago & Area - Centennial, at their meeting January 16th, heard about a successful literacy program called Sandparents. The program, administered by The Rotary Club of Collingwood works in tandem with the Big Brothers and Big Sisters by matching seniors with children under the age of six. Seniors read to the youngsters, sing songs and generally interact with them to develop a mutually rewarding friendship that serves to improve their literacy skills.
